Tremere
Those of this Clan are called “usurpers” for no small reason. They were once a cabal of mortal mages, but their leader, Tremere, became obsessed with the search for immortality, the better to provide him time enough to perfect his art for eternity. Their efforts proved fruitful; although it took the death of a Tzimisce elder and two of their own apprentices, the cabal achieved vampirism.
Not satisfied with this, the Tremere took steps to establish themselves as a full clan. They tracked down Saulot, the enigmatic founder of Clan Salubri, and slew him in torpor; Tremere himself drank the antediluvian’s vitae.
Of course, the new clan immediately came under siege. The Tzimisce thirst for revenge, for the Tremere killed members of their clan and even seized the fiends ancestral lands. The Ganrgel find the Tremere an obscenity, especially because the Usurpers have captured Gangrel for use in their foul experiments. Then, of course, there are the Cainites who had befriended Salubri and even now work to protect the surviving members from the Tremere.
For now, the Tremere live a precarious existence. Their mortal magic was all but destroyed by the Embrace, the salvaged remnants forming their unique Discipline of Thaumaturgy. They have recently managed to create a servitor breed of vampire, the gargoyles, which are the only things keeping from the claws of the Tzimisce and Gangrel. The outrage over Saulot’s diablerization continues to plague them. The clan is badly in need of allies; while a few individuals have proved themselves worthy companions, the whole clan as a whole is despised and distrusted.
Sobriquet: Usurpers
Appearance: This clan is almost entirely male, but more women are beginning to emerge. They tend to wear dark colors, and the more traditional prefer long robes with concealing hoods and full cloaks. They recruit from across Europe, and they may be of many ethnicities.
Haven: The Tremere maintain several “chantries” in and around many of Europe’s major cities, their location known only to the Tremere who reside there. Those who choose to live outside the chantries maintain a number of residences as boltholes and to throw off potential pursuit.
Background: The Tremere normally look for students of the occult, people with intense curiosity abut the world, and intellects and scholars of all varieties. Their current state of siege has forced them temporarily to Embrace for Survival. Among the more recent shifts in choice: men-at-arms, officers with tactical knowledge, and diplomats to assist the Tremere in making their first overtures towards other clans.
Character Creation: Most Tremere come from occult concepts and tend to have primarily mental Attributes and Knowledges. The odd man-at-arms neonate is equally likely to have primary Physical or mental Attributes. Their Natures and Demeanors often reflect power a conservative outlook and loyalty. Tremere backgrounds often include Mentor or resources. The Tremere, infants by clan standards, often follow the road of Humanity, although certain evil occultists have chosen the Devil’s Road.
Clan Disciplines: Auspex, Dominate, Thaumaturgy
Weaknesses: All Tremere neonates are made to drink at least twice from the blood of the seven elders when they are Embraced. This means that they are at least two steps to becoming Thrall to the entire clan. In addition, fledgling Tremere are watched very carefully by their superiors and must be wary of (even unknowingly) betraying their clan.
Organization: Tremere are tightly organized and very hierarchal, following the ideals of the Hermetic house they once were. Younger members are expected to obey their elders without question.
Quote: Our road is clear, and stretches towards nothing less than ultimate control over ourselves and our fellows. But we cannot reach the end alone. As a clan, and only as a clan, may we triumph.”
